"To excel in the structuring of a problem we must be committed to a concern for quality in everything in the world around us. We must learn to care deeply."
—Charles Eames from Slide show "Excellence, G.E. M, 1967
In 2004, Lucia Eames and the Eames family embraced the concept of "caring deeply" by creating the Eames Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to preserve and protect the Eames House and to provide educational experiences that celebrate the creative legacy of Charles and Ray Eames.
With more than 224 designs for furniture, toys, exhibitions, films, graphics, and architecture developed over a 45-year collaboration, Charles and Ray Eames set a standard for design excellence. Working with their multi-talented Eames Office staff, problem solving was a daily adventure in a disciplined, but playful kind of work.
With the establishment of the Eames Foundation, the Eames family hopes to continue this process by creating an environment where "caring deeply" will allow the Foundation to devote its resources to advancing the history, process, and enjoyment of the Eames legacy. Critical thinking skills learned and developed during this process can readily be extended beyond design and applied to the question of how best to live our daily lives, enriching all of us along the way.
Charles was once quoted as saying, "I don't believe in this 'gifted few' concept, just in people doing things they are really interested in doing. They have a way of getting good at whatever it is." We invite you to join us in creating this enriching and creative way to live.
Thank you. |
