October 11, 2014

October 11, 1930 – April 1, 2014. It was a beautiful day, as family and friends gathered to celebrate the life of Lucia Eames, Founder of Eames Foundation.

We are grateful for Lucia’s determination to keep the Eames House open for visitors. Charles and Ray believed deeply in the value of direct experience, and the ability of people to internalize knowledge. Lucia wanted to give that direct experience to others.

In the decade after Charles’ death, Ray had reflected on the many possibilities that were open to her in order to preserve the Eames House. When she died in 1988, she chose to protect the House by leaving it to her daughter, Lucia. In 2004, Lucia chose to protect the Eames House by putting it (complete with the land and contents) into a newly created Foundation: The Charles and Ray Eames House Preservation Foundation, Inc., or simply, the Eames Foundation.
