Volunteer Docent Program

Share your passion for design, history, and education by becoming a volunteer docent. Help visitors experience the Eames House and its story firsthand. We are now accepting applications for Fall 2026 Docent Training. For information, click the drop-down below.

What You’ll Do

The Eames Foundation relies on Volunteer Docents to help in our mission of preserving and communicating the artistic and cultural legacy of Charles and Ray Eames. Docents serve as ambassadors for the Foundation, creating welcoming and meaningful experiences for visitors to the Eames House. At the heart of the role is the relationship between host and guest – continuing Charles and Ray Eames' generous tradition of sharing their home as a place for curiosity and shared discovery. Through thoughtful interpretation, storytelling, and conversation, Volunteer Docents help visitors connect with the work, ideas, and enduring legacy of Charles and Ray Eames.

How You’ll Train

Eames Foundation Docents go through a comprehensive training program which is designed to immerse them in the dynamic and fascinating story of the Eameses’ work – from design conception to philosophy to today’s ongoing conservation efforts of the Eames House. Trainees are given background and historical context on the lives of Charles and Ray, and taught strategies on how to interpret the House and grounds through the framework of the Eameses’ design philosophy, principles, and unique vision.

The Benefits You’ll Enjoy

Volunteer Docents are trusted and valued members of the Eames Foundation team, and enjoy numerous perks and opportunities like invitations to special events at the Eames House, docent outings to other architectural landmarks, days spent in a beautiful setting on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and meeting architecture and design enthusiasts from all over the world.

Current Opportunities

The Foundation is currently seeking applications for our Volunteer Docent Training Program in the fall of 2026. Our training program will run four sessions this fall, and will immerse you in the dynamic and fascinating story of the Eames House – from design conception to philosophy to today’s ongoing conservation efforts. Training culminates in a free Community Day, when we’ll welcome local friends and neighbors to the site free of charge, and trainees can share their new and growing knowledge of this treasured space with our community.

Prior knowledge of architecture, art history and Eames design is a plus but not required. Preference will be given to applicants who can be available to volunteer at least two days per month. Those with working fluency in a second language are especially encouraged to apply.
