Eames House: Impressions of Light — Exhibition Viewing and Cyanotype Workshop
March 4 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Join artist James Clar for a free one-hour Cyanotype Making Workshop at the Eames House, where light, material, and experimentation come together in the spirit of Charles and Ray Eames. The workshop draws inspiration from Clar’s monumental cyanotype banners, Sunlight Filtered Through the Eames House (2024), on display in the Eames House Studio from February 28 through May 16, 2026.
Cyanotype—one of the earliest photographic processes—uses sunlight to create luminous blue-and-white prints. In this workshop, participants will learn the history of the process, prepare light-sensitive paper, and compose their own prints using botanical elements, found objects, and transparencies. As we work, we’ll reflect on the Eameses’ playful approach to materials, their love of experimentation, and their belief that design is a process of discovery.
Set against the backdrop of the Pacific Palisades landscape that inspired so much of their work, this workshop invites you to slow down, observe closely, and engage directly with light and form. No prior experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to explore.
All materials will be provided. Registration is limited to two people per booking. Reserve your one-hour time slot below.
